15th march 2014, freiburg, 243 at the new terminus in gundelfingen alongside heritage car 109 (gt4). 243 has recently been refurbished and presents freiburg's new livery. the refurbishment also featured various detail changes to the interior and the replacement of the bumper reflectors by leds (leds are more energy efficient than reflectors?)

zürich farbhof
9th june 2019. work in progress at farbhof. soon this tramway terminus will make way for the extension to schlieren. compare to the sad 1956 view of the same scene, in which the line to schlieren, which is now being put back, had recently been closed. note the severed tram tracks (but overhead apparently still intact). the turning loop was rebuilt the following year to its present configuration with two loop tracks. as from september of 2019, there will once again be through tracks but the loop will be gone. source: tram museum zürich / tmz revue

inscription on casting of peckham number 8 truck
2nd april 2011, detail of zürich 93. the car is only temporarily supported on the truck, hence the wooden block instead of the leaf spring. see also this news item . i believe the full text (partly obliterated by the subsequent welding on of an additional flange and widening of the axle box to permit more powerful motors to be added) reads "peckhams flexible gear manufactured by peckham motortruck & wheel co 8 kingston n y patented aug 30 1892". the 8 refers to this being a number 8 type truck according to the manufacturer's catalogue. also visible is the company's monogram ptc. edgar peckham devised an ingenious modular system permitting trucks of different dimensions to be assembled from standard parts. a more complete text is legible on this specimen . one of the later units manufactured under licence in switzerland by sws (schlieren) can be seen here .

gtz trolleybus number 1
1995, mercedes/abb o405 gtz trolleybus number 1 (former prototype) of 1986 approaches kirche fluntern on route 33. this was the only gtz to have three doors rather than four. it was also the only gtz to gave carried this livery variation with more generous use of blue. the livery lasted until 1999. the bus was unpopular with staff as the missing rear door supposedly lead to longer loading times and made time keeping difficult. it was hence frequently used for driver training. this became official in 2007 when the bus could be declared surplus to the requirements of the regular fleet and was renumbered 4122 in the training fleet. this status was short lived however, as the bus suffered a transmission failure later that year and was scrapped for spares .

tram 2038 zürich 5th august 2008
5th august 2008, 2038 as the rear unit of a coupled set at bucheggplatz. 2038 is a unique unit, being the only tram 2000 in zürich to have a headlamp n the rear end. note that the red tail light is also moved from its usual position above the window to inside it. this lam's normal position is occupied by a stub to which windscreen wipers can be fixed. this tram was thus equipped to work a shuttle service between kunsthaus and bellevue during building work in the 1980s.

forch hell
14th december 2006, the red signs "forch hell" travel further north than ever before. this was possibly the first day since the opening of the auzelg extension (on 10th december) that these signs were displayed on route 11, so making them visible in places where they were hitherto unseen. the use of such signs goes back a long way and is still an important and sympathetic way of encouraging people to leave the overcast winter down and ride by tram to an area which is basking in the sun — not fuertaventura or the phillipines, but the forch area just aside zürich. similar signs (uetlibgerg hell) are carried on routes 13 and 14 when similar weather treats zürich's uetliberg mountain. this view shows the stop messe/hallenstadion, until recently the terminus of route 11. part of the old turning circle can be seen on the left. this feature is being retained to serve major events in the messe (exhibition centre) and hallenstadion (the indoor stadium, the building in the background). zoom in

forchbahn
autumn 2003, classic forchbahn bogie car 10 close to neuhaus. although this was a special working, the vehicle could at the time occasionally still be seen in regular service. it is now the subject of a preservation attempt by vhf (link to external website). the vehicle was ordered by forchbahn 1940, but due to wartime material shortyges it was not delivered until 1944. together with its sister vehicle, number 9 (now a works car), it heralded the beginning of the transformation of this railway from an antiquated interurban tramway to a modern suburban light railway.

25th october 2001. tram 2000 car 2113 has been fitted with a low floor section. the section was built in the vbz's own workshops using mainly tram 2000 parts. here the lengthened car stands at oerlikon station on it's first day in service. 2113 ran on route 10 on this and the following day before being transferred to route 6. note the non-standard paint scheme around the articulations (on single-articulated tram 2000 cars, the blue band is broader).

zürich cargotram
cargotram at wollishofen on it's first day in service (15th april 2003). this view of trailer 1984 clearly shows its peckham truck. this truck is now serving it's third purpose. in contrast to the later peckham trucks which were built under licence in switzerland, the original batch were imported from the usa. these were used for cars 57 - 84. these cars originally had open balconies which were later glazed. their low power and limited capacity led to their conversion to trailers 473-500 between 1926 and 1929. new lighter trucks were constructed for these trailers and the original trucks were reutilised for works cars of various types and descriptions. a small number of these survive today, among them crane car 1952 . trailers 1984 and 1987 survived as permanent way wagons but saw little use during their final years. their next rebuild was in 2003 when they were prepared to carry standard refuse containers.

gtz trolleybus 106
3rd february 2014. gtz trolleybus 106 at bucheggplatz. in its final months of service, this trolleybus has attained a somewhat celebrity status, being the only remaining gtz in close to original condition with those crisp clear roller blinds rather than fuzzy matrix displays, and still sporting that abb logo. 106 entered service in 1994.

gtz trolleybus bucheggplatz, 5th august 2008
5th august 2008, a mercedes/abb o405 gtz trolleybus of the first batch on route 32 at bucheggplatz. the remaining vehicles of this batch are soon to vanish, having been replaced by modern low-floor trolleybuses. the most visible difference between the earlier and later batch was the holding mechanism for the lowered trolley booms, which was much smaller on the second batch, and shaped more like a pair of umbrella handles. among politically incorrect trolleybus drivers, route 32 is called orient express , reflecting the ethnic makeup of the langstrasse area through which it runs.

50 years 11173
26th september 2020. koblenz. dsf tour to mark the 50th anniversdary of re 4/4 ii 11173. we are so iused to seeing the old 5-digit numbers removed and replaced by longer computer numbers, that it is refreshing to see the computer number reduced to traces, and the old number restituted, even if only (for the moment) as transfers rather than chrome digits.

glass recycling by re460
15th february 2008, sadly, sbb chose to regularly deface their class re460 locomotives by advertising. most of this is incredibly boring, however 460 071-4 is a welcome break to this rule. it is sponsored by the glass recycling company, vetroswiss, and features painted holes for inserting those used bottles (please don't try!).

alicante benalua station
5th january 2014. the benalua station in alicante (estación de benalúa) was once the terminus of the line going south to murcia and beyond into andalucia (an alternative name for the station is estación de murcia). not only was this system practically robbed of its trunk-line status through the closure of the almendricos - guadix section (effectively severing the mediterranean corridor south of lorca), but it lost its terminus in alicante when passenger services were transferred to the former mza termino station nearby. following closure of the passenger service, benalua continued to serve as a goods station, serving the adjoining port. today very few - if any - goods trains still come here. having slumbered in disuse for many years, the station building is now being converted into "casa del mediteranneo"

vbz päcklibus
10th december 2014. vbz's parcel bus has become a regular feature of the christmas shopping scene on bahnhofstrasse, providing a place where shoppers can leave items and even get help with packaging. rumour has it, the days of this bus are numbered. this is saurer guk nr 540, built 1967, withdrawn 1994, set aside as a heritage vehicle and now renumbered in the four digit series as a non-revenue vehicle.

freiburg
29.6.15. stadtbahnwagen 214 was once the pride of freiburg's fleet. delievered in 1981, the car even had a children's book dedicated to it. but alas the car is approaching the end of its working life in freiburg. with its ugly led destination displays, it certainly looks a mere shadow of its former elegance.
