Alicante Benalua station

5th January 2014. The Benalua station in Alicante (Estación de Benalúa) was once the terminus of the line going South to Murcia and beyond into Andalucia (an alternative name for the station is Estación de Murcia). Not only was this system practically robbed of its trunk-line status through the closure of the Almendricos - Guadix section (effectively severing the Mediterranean corridor South of Lorca), but it lost its terminus in Alicante when passenger services were transferred to the former MZA Termino station nearby. Following closure of the passenger service, Benalua continued to serve as a goods station, serving the adjoining port. Today very few - if any - goods trains still come here. Having slumbered in disuse for many years, the station building is now being converted into "Casa del Mediteranneo"
