18.10.2007. tram museum at burgwies, ex-bvb 8 was originally albisgütlibahn 2 of 1907 and returned to zürich inn 2007. by a rare stroke of luck, all five cars of this batch survive: albisgütlibahn 1 and 3 are in innsbruck and 2 and 4 at klagenfurth. the car is a long-term restoration project, and is currently displayed in it as-withdrawn condition.

1995, mercedes/abb o405 gtz trolleybus number 1 (former prototype) of 1986 approaches kirche fluntern on route 33. this was the only gtz to have three doors rather than four. it was also the only gtz to gave carried this livery variation with more generous use of blue. the livery lasted until 1999. the bus was unpopular with staff as the missing rear door supposedly lead to longer loading times and made time keeping difficult. it was hence frequently used for driver training. this became official in 2007 when the bus could be declared surplus to the requirements of the regular fleet and was renumbered 4122 in the training fleet. this status was short lived however, as the bus suffered a transmission failure later that year and was scrapped for spares .

21st october 2008, 3062 is not the only white cobra, and not the first either. this is 3027 , carrying a livery celebrating the 175th anniversary of zürich university. here it is on route 9 at langmauerstr. the statue in the foreground is in memory of felix salten, creator of the original bambi story, who died in zürich in 1945.

5th august 2008, 2038 as the rear unit of a coupled set at bucheggplatz. 2038 is a unique unit, being the only tram 2000 in zürich to have a headlamp n the rear end. note that the red tail light is also moved from its usual position above the window to inside it. this lam's normal position is occupied by a stub to which windscreen wipers can be fixed. this tram was thus equipped to work a shuttle service between kunsthaus and bellevue during building work in the 1980s.

6th august 2008, the neugut viaduct at wallisellen. the train on the viaduct is heading for dübendorf and will pass below the viaduct on the right which carries the line to winterthur via dietikon. the two lines converge in stettbac which is behind the photographer's back. these viaducts were both built as part of zürich's new cross-town rail link in the 1980s. a third railway is now entering the scene in the form of the glattalbahn light railway. the earth mounds in the foreground are the signs of the first earthworks of its construction. the line will cross the picture from left to right at ground level approximately where the photographer is standing.

2119 heads a tram 2000 + pony up leonhardstrasse in november 2003. route 6 climbs some 200 metres between hauptbahnhof and zoo. 2119 has since been rebuilt with a low floor centre section ( sänfte ). the italianate tower of liebfrauenkirche can be seen to the right.

autumn 2003, classic forchbahn bogie car 10 close to neuhaus. although this was a special working, the vehicle could at the time occasionally still be seen in regular service. it is now the subject of a preservation attempt by vhf (link to external website). the vehicle was ordered by forchbahn 1940, but due to wartime material shortyges it was not delivered until 1944. together with its sister vehicle, number 9 (now a works car), it heralded the beginning of the transformation of this railway from an antiquated interurban tramway to a modern suburban light railway.

in the early 1970s, zürich was planning an underground ( u-bahn ). the plans were rejected in a referendum in 1973. this artist's impression shows how lindenplatz stop might have looked. some sections on which work had already commenced were put to other uses, including a tram subway. for more information on this, visit this page: from u-bahn to tram tunnel . the illustrated stop would have been built by cut-and-cover. compare this to the deep-level-bore station that was planned at schaffhauserplatz ..

tierspital stop on the milchbuck to schwamendingerplatz subway. this tunnel was built for zürich's planned u-bahn . this project was, however, discarded in a referendum in 1973. the subway finally found a new use when a tram line was opened through it in 1986. to compare this picture to how the u-bahn could have looked, visit this page: from u-bahn to tram tunnel .

cargotram at wollishofen on it's first day in service (15th april 2003). this view of trailer 1984 clearly shows its peckham truck. this truck is now serving it's third purpose. in contrast to the later peckham trucks which were built under licence in switzerland, the original batch were imported from the usa. these were used for cars 57 - 84. these cars originally had open balconies which were later glazed. their low power and limited capacity led to their conversion to trailers 473-500 between 1926 and 1929. new lighter trucks were constructed for these trailers and the original trucks were reutilised for works cars of various types and descriptions. a small number of these survive today, among them crane car 1952 . trailers 1984 and 1987 survived as permanent way wagons but saw little use during their final years. their next rebuild was in 2003 when they were prepared to carry standard refuse containers.

electric tram on the paseo in alicante in 1950. these rounded-looking cars were rebodied in he 1940s from earlier vehicles. the building in the background still stands today, the palm trees have grown a little taller and this part of the paseo is now an elegant pedestrianised promenade. wouldn't it be wonderful to see today's tram line extended to once again run along the full length of central alicante's beautiful waterfront? 29.6.15. stadtbahnwagen 214 was once the pride of freiburg's fleet. delievered in 1981, the car even had a children's book dedicated to it. but alas the car is approaching the end of its working life in freiburg. with its ugly led destination displays, it certainly looks a mere shadow of its former elegance.
