16th may 2011. the new archway carrying a foot and cycle path across pfingstweidstrasse will at the same time symbolise an 'entrance gate' to z&uum;rich. the path it carries is being created along a disused railway siding, the track of which is visible close to the new tram tracks in this view. apparently, this section of railway track will be retained as a visible reminder. see also this news item .

18th june 2009. view of the swissmill industrial siding from the west side. this will be diverted to pass under the bridge further south, so eliminating the need for two additional rail/tram crossings when the new tram line is built. the fumes of the diesel locomotives that work this siding have left their marks on the bridge. disused tracks of other industries are seen to the left.

18th june 2009. view of the swissmill industrial siding from the east side. this will be diverted to eliminating the need for two additional rail/tram crossings with the new tram line. the currently disused track that goes straight ahead will be reverted to use, with a new connecting rack added below the bridge further south.

cobra in hofwiesenstrasse
9th august 2008, a cobra tram between bucheggplatz and radiostudio. the sternen oerlikon destination probably indicates this is a depot working (on this day much of the town centre was closed due to the annual street parade). the overhead pipe in the foreground is to pump water out of the works of the new cross-town railway tunnel (durchmesserlinie) which is being built, and a shaft for which has been sunk close to this site.

neugut viadcuct, 6th august 2008
6th august 2008, the neugut viaduct at wallisellen. the train on the viaduct is heading for dübendorf and will pass below the viaduct on the right which carries the line to winterthur via dietikon. the two lines converge in stettbac which is behind the photographer's back. these viaducts were both built as part of zürich's new cross-town rail link in the 1980s. a third railway is now entering the scene in the form of the glattalbahn light railway. the earth mounds in the foreground are the signs of the first earthworks of its construction. the line will cross the picture from left to right at ground level approximately where the photographer is standing.

1st july 2008. a tram 2000 set has just cross the bridge over the glatt river and now crosses a road protected by barriers.

5th february 2008. the motorway cust below lindbergplatz in a shallow tunnel. the square itself is located between novotel and kraft. the tram will cross the motorway there before entering the glattbrugg subway.

mixed gauge track
25th april 2007. until not very long ago, a dense network of sidings criss-crossed the industrial area of zürich west. much of the industry has since given way to residential usage, but in places interesting elements of trackwork remain, albeit mostly disused. note the narrow gauge turntables set within the standard gauge track!

bahnhof glattbrugg
17th april 2007. the tram will emerge from its subway through the new opening in the embankment (centre of picture). this embankment carries a road over the railway line. in the past, when the old zos tram service still ran here, it used a level crossing instead.

glattalbahn construction
19.10.06 bhf glattbrugg. the stadtbahn subway will emerge to the left of the railway bridge. interestingly, it will not be the first tram to run here. the zos (zürich - oerlikon - seebach) line to glattbrugg ran on the road which is now carried by this bridge (but then crossed the railway at grade).

zürich var picdescr="w&l&jpg&0?http://www.datacomm.ch/shadowfax/tram/photo/zurich/milchbuck1_c.html?" zürich. 15th december 2001. zürich certainly has no shortage of complex junctions, yet no other is in such an almost woodland setting, and no other is so lavishly laid out as to allow trams to be photographed at different levels. the location is milchbuck, a busy tram, trolleybus and bus interchange adjoining irchel park. to the left a mirage set on route 7 emerges from the schwamendingen tram subway, while the tram 2000 set on the right is heading for the same subway. due to the central platforms in the tunnel, trams have to run on the left, and the lines are crossed over at this junction, explaining the need for the outbound line to rise over the inbound line before the former can enter the tunnel. the tram 2000 set in the background is waiting to leave the turning circle on a short working of route 9. the tracks used by routes 10 and 14 to oerlikon continue to it's left. the snow had fallen two days earlier and was to last well into the new year. if picture failed to load, click here photo by a. moglestue . last updated 15.01.02 counter added 15.01.02

industrial railway tracks in zürich oerlikon
16 september 2013, roadworks on elias-canetti-strasse in zürich oerlikon revealed these narrow gauge tracks. i don't know anything about the history of these tracks. the rail is of extremely light grade and so possibly used for hand-pushed trolleys. this area was part of the mfo factory site, which was until not very long ago criss-crossed by a veritable labyrinth of industrial sidings, the remnants of one of which is still visible in this same street. these tracks are definitely too light to be standard gauge however, so must have been part of a different system. this picture is part of a series of four .

piotta
3rd august 2007, railway hydro-generating station at piotta (near airolo). this power station was built at the time of the electrification of the gotthard railway. the tracks going up the mountain on the left are the funicular to piora. the power station is fed from a lake at ritom, just beyond piora. the tracks in the foreground are a siding from the gotthard railway, built to deliver parts tom the power station. the siding crosses the gotthard motorway at grade!

12th april 2008, basel, on the banks of the rhine near hörnli. as the sign to the right informs us, the trolleybus is approaching the customs. however, rather then acontinuing into geramny, route 31 turns left just before the border crossing.
