13rd july 2009. on account of construction work at stadelhoferplatz, forchbahn had to be turned just short of this location in kreuzstrasse between 11th july and 16th august 2009. for this purpose a temporary turnout was layed on the road surface. note that the forchbahn train also carries the route number 11. for the duration of the works, the forchbahn served all stops along the route, thus temporarily replacing tram route 11.

cobra in hofwiesenstrasse
9th august 2008, a cobra tram between bucheggplatz and radiostudio. the sternen oerlikon destination probably indicates this is a depot working (on this day much of the town centre was closed due to the annual street parade). the overhead pipe in the foreground is to pump water out of the works of the new cross-town railway tunnel (durchmesserlinie) which is being built, and a shaft for which has been sunk close to this site.

neugut viadcuct, 6th august 2008
6th august 2008, the neugut viaduct at wallisellen. the train on the viaduct is heading for dübendorf and will pass below the viaduct on the right which carries the line to winterthur via dietikon. the two lines converge in stettbac which is behind the photographer's back. these viaducts were both built as part of zürich's new cross-town rail link in the 1980s. a third railway is now entering the scene in the form of the glattalbahn light railway. the earth mounds in the foreground are the signs of the first earthworks of its construction. the line will cross the picture from left to right at ground level approximately where the photographer is standing.

2nd december 2006, kurbeli 1408 and an accident-damaged mirage between mirage bogies outside altstetten workshops. the mirage will probably be scrapped soon, wheras the fate of the kurbeli remains uncertain. aps have attempted to secure it for preservation but finding adequate storage space still presents a hurdle.

forchbahn
autumn 2003, classic forchbahn bogie car 10 close to neuhaus. although this was a special working, the vehicle could at the time occasionally still be seen in regular service. it is now the subject of a preservation attempt by vhf (link to external website). the vehicle was ordered by forchbahn 1940, but due to wartime material shortyges it was not delivered until 1944. together with its sister vehicle, number 9 (now a works car), it heralded the beginning of the transformation of this railway from an antiquated interurban tramway to a modern suburban light railway.

25th october 2001. tram 2000 car 2113 has been fitted with a low floor section. the section was built in the vbz's own workshops using mainly tram 2000 parts. here the lengthened car stands at oerlikon station on it's first day in service. 2113 ran on route 10 on this and the following day before being transferred to route 6. note the non-standard paint scheme around the articulations (on single-articulated tram 2000 cars, the blue band is broader).

cargotram at wollishofen on it's first day in service (15th april 2003). this view of trailer 1984 clearly shows its peckham truck. this truck is now serving it's third purpose. in contrast to the later peckham trucks which were built under licence in switzerland, the original batch were imported from the usa. these were used for cars 57 - 84. these cars originally had open balconies which were later glazed. their low power and limited capacity led to their conversion to trailers 473-500 between 1926 and 1929. new lighter trucks were constructed for these trailers and the original trucks were reutilised for works cars of various types and descriptions. a small number of these survive today, among them crane car 1952 . trailers 1984 and 1987 survived as permanent way wagons but saw little use during their final years. their next rebuild was in 2003 when they were prepared to carry standard refuse containers.

zürich 2113 var picdescr="w&500x640x_l&jpg&0?http://www.datacomm.ch/shadowfax/tram/photo/zurich/950805_1905_c.html?" zürich. works car 1905 at wartau loop on 5th august 1905. this car was built in 1962 using the truck of 1224. it was used to shunt the trailers which were attached or detached during the course of the day to suit demand. the single cab and open construction made it more suitable for shunting than the original passenger tram body. note the roof level contact to provide power to heat trailers. the demise of four wheeled trailers meant that these units had only a short life. some were subsequently sold to other tram systems. 1905 is preserved by tram museum zürich. if picture failed to load, click here photo by a. moglestue . last updated 19.11.02. counter added 19.11.02.

16 september 2013, roadworks on elias-canetti-strasse in zürich oerlikon revealed these narrow gauge tracks. i don't know anything about the history of these tracks. the rail is of extremely light grade and so possibly used for hand-pushed trolleys. this area was part of the mfo factory site, which was until not very long ago criss-crossed by a veritable labyrinth of industrial sidings, the remnants of one of which is still visible in this same street. these tracks are definitely too light to be standard gauge however, so must have been part of a different system. this picture is part of a series of four .
