gtz trolleybus number 1
1995, mercedes/abb o405 gtz trolleybus number 1 (former prototype) of 1986 approaches kirche fluntern on route 33. this was the only gtz to have three doors rather than four. it was also the only gtz to gave carried this livery variation with more generous use of blue. the livery lasted until 1999. the bus was unpopular with staff as the missing rear door supposedly lead to longer loading times and made time keeping difficult. it was hence frequently used for driver training. this became official in 2007 when the bus could be declared surplus to the requirements of the regular fleet and was renumbered 4122 in the training fleet. this status was short lived however, as the bus suffered a transmission failure later that year and was scrapped for spares .

tram 2038 zürich 5th august 2008
5th august 2008, 2038 as the rear unit of a coupled set at bucheggplatz. 2038 is a unique unit, being the only tram 2000 in zürich to have a headlamp n the rear end. note that the red tail light is also moved from its usual position above the window to inside it. this lam's normal position is occupied by a stub to which windscreen wipers can be fixed. this tram was thus equipped to work a shuttle service between kunsthaus and bellevue during building work in the 1980s.

zürich 29th july 2008

5th february 2008. the balsberg to airport viaduct of glattalbahn. the buildings to the left are within the perimeter fence, and obviously security forces must have been worried about the proximity of the viaduct as a high security fence runs along one side of this. i wonder how many hijackers will try to enter the airport by jumping from a tram?

forch hell
14th december 2006, the red signs "forch hell" travel further north than ever before. this was possibly the first day since the opening of the auzelg extension (on 10th december) that these signs were displayed on route 11, so making them visible in places where they were hitherto unseen. the use of such signs goes back a long way and is still an important and sympathetic way of encouraging people to leave the overcast winter down and ride by tram to an area which is basking in the sun — not fuertaventura or the phillipines, but the forch area just aside zürich. similar signs (uetlibgerg hell) are carried on routes 13 and 14 when similar weather treats zürich's uetliberg mountain. this view shows the stop messe/hallenstadion, until recently the terminus of route 11. part of the old turning circle can be seen on the left. this feature is being retained to serve major events in the messe (exhibition centre) and hallenstadion (the indoor stadium, the building in the background). zoom in

zürich as it might have been: lindenplatz u-bahn stop
In the early 1970s, Zürich was planning an underground ( U-Bahn ). The plans were rejected in a referendum in 1973. This artist's impression shows how Lindenplatz stop might have looked. Some sections on which work had already commenced were put to other uses, including a tram subway. For more information on this, visit this page: From U-Bahn to tram tunnel . The illustrated stop would have been built by cut-and-cover. Compare this to the deep-level-bore station that was planned at Schaffhauserplatz ..

zürich var picdescr="w&l&jpg&0?http://www.datacomm.ch/shadowfax/tram/photo/zurich/milchbuck1_c.html?" zürich. 15th december 2001. zürich certainly has no shortage of complex junctions, yet no other is in such an almost woodland setting, and no other is so lavishly laid out as to allow trams to be photographed at different levels. the location is milchbuck, a busy tram, trolleybus and bus interchange adjoining irchel park. to the left a mirage set on route 7 emerges from the schwamendingen tram subway, while the tram 2000 set on the right is heading for the same subway. due to the central platforms in the tunnel, trams have to run on the left, and the lines are crossed over at this junction, explaining the need for the outbound line to rise over the inbound line before the former can enter the tunnel. the tram 2000 set in the background is waiting to leave the turning circle on a short working of route 9. the tracks used by routes 10 and 14 to oerlikon continue to it's left. the snow had fallen two days earlier and was to last well into the new year. if picture failed to load, click here photo by a. moglestue . last updated 15.01.02 counter added 15.01.02

zürich var picdescr="w&l&jpg&0?http://www.datacomm.ch/shadowfax/tram/photo/zurich/1995jan02_c.html?" zürich. the p16s normally operate in sets of one motor unit and a trailer. they are actually capable of multiple unit operation, although this cannot be used in everyday sevice for lack of a connector provision. for trial purposes only, a set with two motor cars and a trailer once operated. but four p16s in one train? what is going on here? normally trams have no difficulty with the snow, but the particular moist snow on in january 1995 was just too much for the leading p16 on route 5, which had to pushed up gloriastr. towards kirche fluntern by the following p16 on route 6. if picture failed to load, click here photo by a. moglestue . last updated 05.04.02. counter added 05.04.02.

alicante, electric tram
electric tram on the paseo in alicante in 1950. these rounded-looking cars were rebodied in he 1940s from earlier vehicles. the building in the background still stands today, the palm trees have grown a little taller and this part of the paseo is now an elegant pedestrianised promenade. wouldn't it be wonderful to see today's tram line extended to once again run along the full length of central alicante's beautiful waterfront? ae6/6 locomotive
14th august 2008, zürich altstetten the sad state of affairs with the nameplates removed from this once proud ae6/6 locomotive. the move was apparently justified by the wish to save these prizes from souvenir hunters. it was said that they would be replaced once a means had been found to make them theft-proof. alas that was the last we saw of them.

industrial railway tracks in zürich oerlikon
16 september 2013, roadworks on elias-canetti-strasse in zürich oerlikon revealed these narrow gauge tracks. i don't know anything about the history of these tracks. the rail is of extremely light grade and so possibly used for hand-pushed trolleys. this area was part of the mfo factory site, which was until not very long ago criss-crossed by a veritable labyrinth of industrial sidings, the remnants of one of which is still visible in this same street. these tracks are definitely too light to be standard gauge however, so must have been part of a different system. this picture is part of a series of four .
