18th june 2009. aargauerstrasse. the future tram meets a future cisalpino train, stabled in sbb's herdern sidings.

gtz trolleybus number 1
1995, mercedes/abb o405 gtz trolleybus number 1 (former prototype) of 1986 approaches kirche fluntern on route 33. this was the only gtz to have three doors rather than four. it was also the only gtz to gave carried this livery variation with more generous use of blue. the livery lasted until 1999. the bus was unpopular with staff as the missing rear door supposedly lead to longer loading times and made time keeping difficult. it was hence frequently used for driver training. this became official in 2007 when the bus could be declared surplus to the requirements of the regular fleet and was renumbered 4122 in the training fleet. this status was short lived however, as the bus suffered a transmission failure later that year and was scrapped for spares .

13th december 2008. opening of glattalbahn to airport . cobra tram approaching airport from balsberg. the line's proximity to the airport makes it easier to photograph trams from above. this shot was not taken from an airliner however, but from the car park. interestingly, the elevators in this car park don't let you go from one floor to another but only between the ground floor and the individual floors. fortunately there are also stairs.

9th august 2008, a cobra tram between bucheggplatz and radiostudio. the sternen oerlikon destination probably indicates this is a depot working (on this day much of the town centre was closed due to the annual street parade). the overhead pipe in the foreground is to pump water out of the works of the new cross-town railway tunnel (durchmesserlinie) which is being built, and a shaft for which has been sunk close to this site.

5th august 2008, 2038 as the rear unit of a coupled set at bucheggplatz. 2038 is a unique unit, being the only tram 2000 in zürich to have a headlamp n the rear end. note that the red tail light is also moved from its usual position above the window to inside it. this lam's normal position is occupied by a stub to which windscreen wipers can be fixed. this tram was thus equipped to work a shuttle service between kunsthaus and bellevue during building work in the 1980s.

25th april 2007. until not very long ago, a dense network of sidings criss-crossed the industrial area of zürich west. much of the industry has since given way to residential usage, but in places interesting elements of trackwork remain, albeit mostly disused. note the narrow gauge turntables set within the standard gauge track!

29th september 2007, tram museum in zuffenhausen the gt4 tram is one of those that was "demoted" for use only as the second unit in a set. hence one of the headlamps is plated over and no cab partition was added (the units with this partition are easily recognisable by the additional pillar dividing the first large window).

3rd february 2014. gtz trolleybus 106 at bucheggplatz. in its final months of service, this trolleybus has attained a somewhat celebrity status, being the only remaining gtz in close to original condition with those crisp clear roller blinds rather than fuzzy matrix displays, and still sporting that abb logo. 106 entered service in 1994.

industrial railway tracks in zürich oerlikon
16 september 2013, roadworks on elias-canetti-strasse in zürich oerlikon revealed these narrow gauge tracks. i don't know anything about the history of these tracks. the rail is of extremely light grade and so possibly used for hand-pushed trolleys. this area was part of the mfo factory site, which was until not very long ago criss-crossed by a veritable labyrinth of industrial sidings, the remnants of one of which is still visible in this same street. these tracks are definitely too light to be standard gauge however, so must have been part of a different system. this picture is part of a series of four .

ekebergbanen (oslo), four-axle motor-coach 1007. the brown boveri review , december 1924. these cars, numbered 1006-1012 were delivered in 1920-21. they were built by skabo, with electric equipment and the motors coming from bbc's norwegian subsidiary, nebb. at 14.9 m length and 2.1 m width, they weighed an impressive 26,5 tons. in the 1950s, parts from this type were re-used for new cars that lasted until the 1970s. the illustrated vehicle, 1007, is preserved in a museum at vinterbro. for more information on tram preservation in oslo, visit the website of sporveismuseet.no .

2nd april 2009. a classic amtrak train: amtrak's heartland flyer at fort worth. the leading vehicle, 90229, is in fact not the locomotive but a driving trailer with baggage compartment, presumably converted from a locomotive. the real locomotive is on the rear of the train. the heartland flyer is a daily train connecting oklahoma city and fort worth. it is co-financed by the states of oklahoma and texas.

30th april 2008, houston. something for an inhabitant of zürich to feel at home. they have a binz street in houston, but as far as i could find out, the szu doesn't go there.

30th april 2008, houston. toyota, i suppose is got its name here through advertising (a large centre in the neighbourhood is called the toyota center). austin, however, probably refers to the texan town rather than the british rival of toyota.
