double deck tram in zurich?
do double deck trams run in zürich? no, only on this picture taken from a vbz advertising poster — drawing attention to the new sihlcity centre, where shopping etc is "almost as good london".
forch hell
14th december 2006, the red signs "forch hell" travel further north than ever before. this was possibly the first day since the opening of the auzelg extension (on 10th december) that these signs were displayed on route 11, so making them visible in places where they were hitherto unseen.
the use of such signs goes back a long way and is still an important and sympathetic way of encouraging people to leave the overcast winter down and ride by tram to an area which is basking in the sun — not fuertaventura or the phillipines, but the forch area just aside zürich.
similar signs (uetlibgerg hell) are carried on routes 13 and 14 when similar weather treats zürich's uetliberg mountain.
this view shows the stop messe/hallenstadion, until recently the terminus of route 11. part of the old turning circle can be seen on the left. this feature is being retained to serve major events in the messe (exhibition centre) and hallenstadion (the indoor stadium, the building in the background).

in the early 1970s, zürich was planning an underground ( u-bahn ). the plans were rejected in a referendum in 1973. this artist's impression shows how lindenplatz stop might have looked. some sections on which work had already commenced were put to other uses, including a tram subway. for more information on this, visit this page: from u-bahn to tram tunnel .
the illustrated stop would have been built by cut-and-cover. compare this to the deep-level-bore station that was planned at schaffhauserplatz ..

??.??.?? farewell tour of lightweight standard car 1531 (right). this was retained by vbz many years beyond the demise of this type from regular service. it was intended to use it on private hire tours, but the car proved insufficiently popular to warrant it's retention. it was thus scrapped when it became due for overhaul. tram museum zürich ran a farewell tour on it's very last day. here it meets preserved intermediate standard car 1392 outside bahnhof wiedikon depot.

on the 25th october 1994, a be4/4 standard car on route 6 has just left the zoo terminus and is approaching susenbergstr. stop. large scale operation of standard cars had ceased in may of that year, but a small number were retained on route 6 for sime time beyond this to cover for overhauls of the p16 be4/4s. further units were returned to service in the autumn due to their superior adhesion on this steep route during the leaf fall season.

as a design study in preparation for the new generation of tramcars, one double set of mirage was internally refitted. it has attractive clean wooden seats and indirect lighting. unfortunately, too few of these features were finally adopted by the pininfarina team in the final design of the cobra. externally, the new car carries a sliver livery inset with hunderdes of mini portaits. it is known as regenbogentram .
the set is seen here on badenerstrasse approaching luggweg on 16th march 2002.

ex limmattal strassenbahn (lsb) tramcar nr.2 under restoration by tram museum zürich at escher wyss depot. the car, dating from 1900, was sold to the martigny chatelard railway in the 1930's where it remained in use for many years. the car was returned to zürich in forlorn condition in the 1970's but restoration did not start until 1995. here the historic car is being reassembled. it will be restored to it's 1920's condition with lsb yellow livery.

15th december 2001. zürich certainly has no shortage of complex junctions, yet no other is in such an almost woodland setting, and no other is so lavishly laid out as to allow trams to be photographed at different levels. the location is milchbuck, a busy tram, trolleybus and bus interchange adjoining irchel park.
to the left a mirage set on route 7 emerges from the schwamendingen tram subway, while the tram 2000 set on the right is heading for the same subway. due to the central platforms in the tunnel, trams have to run on the left, and the lines are crossed over at this junction, explaining the need for the outbound line to rise over the inbound line before the former can enter the tunnel. the tram 2000 set in the background is waiting to leave the turning circle on a short working of route 9. the tracks used by routes 10 and 14 to oerlikon continue to it's left.
the snow had fallen two days earlier and was to last well into the new year.

on the 25th october 1994, a be4/4 p16 car on route 6 approaches toblerplatz in front of a colourful autumn backdrop.
the p16s had displced standard cars from this route in may of that year. having previously not been used on route 6, the p16s still displayed the original yellow route 6 recognition colour. this had long since been changed to brown to avoid confusion with yellow route 13. during the following months, the route indicator blinds were replaced, but not without allowing photographers to recapture the otherwise long vanished yellow 6.

works car 1905 at wartau loop on 5th august 1905. this car was built in 1962 using the truck of 1224. it was used to shunt the trailers which were attached or detached during the course of the day to suit demand. the single cab and open construction made it more suitable for shunting than the original passenger tram body. note the roof level contact to provide power to heat trailers. the demise of four wheeled trailers meant that these units had only a short life. some were subsequently sold to other tram systems. 1905 is preserved by tram museum zürich.

the p16s normally operate in sets of one motor unit and a trailer. they are actually capable of multiple unit operation, although this cannot be used in everyday sevice for lack of a connector provision. for trial purposes only, a set with two motor cars and a trailer once operated. but four p16s in one train? what is going on here?
normally trams have no difficulty with the snow, but the particular moist snow on in january 1995 was just too much for the leading p16 on route 5, which had to pushed up gloriastr. towards kirche fluntern by the following p16 on route 6.

21st august 2020. szili beer in mav restaurant car on the balaton route.
commencing in 2019, restaurant cars were reintroduced on the budapest to balaton route (summer only) ... and again in 2020. i hope this becomes a permanent fixture. this railway-themed craft beer is named szili after the class v43 electric locomotive.
